We use the Eye-light® Mask System to activate natural cellular repair processes, reduce inflammation, and support long-term retinal health. This gentle, non-invasive treatment offers an alternative approach to traditional care pathways.

  • Led by our highly experienced optometrists James Turner and Ankur Trivedi, and supported by our dedicated clinical coordinator to ensure a structured, supportive experience at every stage of your care.
  • Ankur is a board member of the Association of Optometrists, (AOP) reflecting his leadership and commitment to the highest clinical standards.

Dry age-related macular degeneration (Dry AMD) is the non-exudative and atrophic form of macular degeneration. It develops gradually as the macula, the part of the retina responsible for clear central vision, becomes thinner over time.

Although it does not usually lead to complete blindness, it can significantly impact everyday life, making tasks like reading, driving, and recognising faces increasingly difficult which reduces the quality of life patients have.

For many years, patients diagnosed with dry AMD were often told there was little that could be done beyond monitoring the condition. At our practice, we take pride in doing things differently.

We stay at the forefront of clinical research and emerging technologies, allowing us to offer a more proactive, structured approach to managing dry AMD, with a focus on preserving vision and slowing progression where possible.

DID YOU KNOW

More than 280 million people are expected to be affected globally by 2040 of which dry AMD represents around 90% yet effective treatment options have historically been limited.

Photobiomodulation is a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to support cellular function within the retina.

Key Benefits

Produces Cellular Energy Support
Encourages ATP production in retinal cells, helping improve cellular performance and resilience.

Slowing Disease Progression
Clinical evidence suggests PBM may reduce drusen accumulation and help slow the advancement of Dry AMD.

Comfortable Treatment Experience
Delivered via the Eye-light® mask, allowing you to relax during treatment while targeting both the retina and surrounding structures quickly and simply.

Does this treatment affect patients with light-triggered migraines?

There have been no reported cases of low-level light therapy (LLLT) inducing migraines. However, as a precaution, we recommend that you arrange for someone to accompany you and drive you home following your first treatment session.

I have a history of skin cancer. Am I still suitable for treatment?

A previous history of skin cancer does not automatically exclude you from treatment. The primary contraindication is the presence of active cancer within the area being treated.

What wavelengths of light are used?

The treatment utilises specific wavelengths of light: yellow light at 590 nm and red light at 630 nm, both selected for their therapeutic properties.

What is the difference between this device and the Valeda system?

While both devices operate on similar principles, the Valeda system typically requires a longer treatment commitment, with sessions spread over approximately nine weeks. In contrast, the Espansione system is designed with patient comfort in mind, offering a shorter treatment schedule and a more relaxed, reclined treatment position.

How long does each treatment session take?

Each session lasts approximately 12 minutes, delivered in two phases of 6 minutes each.

Can my current medications interfere with the treatment?

There have been no reported adverse interactions between this treatment and medications. However, if you have any concerns, we recommend consulting your GP or pharmacist for personalised advice.
